Copy & Paste is a way of duplicating a file (Copy), and then placing (Paste) that file somewhere else on your computer.

The file could be any sort of file, a document, a picture, music or video.

It's a two part process, first the Copy, which is as it's name suggests, and then the Paste, which is where you tell the computer to place the file somewhere else.

Take your time, and learn how to Copy & Paste, it's incredibly easy & useful.

    copy & paste.

We're going to need a file to use. We'll create a dummy file in Notepad, save it into a folder, then Copy it from that folder and Paste it into another folder.

That'll give us two versions of the same file, but in different folders.

    Here goes....

    Open Notepad and type:

    File to be copied.

    Name the file Dummy file.

Then save the file into a new folder called Stan AHC on your Desktop.

    file to be copied.

Close Notepad and then create a new folder on your Desktop called Ollie AHC.

You should have 2 new folders on your Desktop.

Stan AHC will have the file we just created inside it.

While Ollie AHC be empty at the moment.

stan & ollie on the desktop.

Open the folder Stan AHC, you can see the Dummy File.

Left click it once to select it, then right click it.

    A menu will open.

On the menu, left click the word COPY.

When you click COPY, the menu will close, but nothing else will seem to happen.

But the computer has made a copy of the file or folder.

Close Stan AHC by clicking the X in the top right corner.

    left click copy.

Now open the folder Ollie AHC.

There's nothing in here at the moment.

We need to tell the computer to put or place the file we just copied, here.

The way we do that is by Pasting it. We Paste the file into place.

Put your pointer into a bit of free space, then right click, the options menu will open.

    Left click the word PASTE.

    The Dummy File will appear.

    left click paste.

The Dummy File is now in both the Stan AHC & Ollie AHC folders.

Check it, make sure it's there. Are they the same?

You've got 2 versions of the same file, but in different locations (folders).

    Told you was easy.

    original or copy.

If you open the original Dummy file that we saved into the Stan AHC folder, and then open the copy that we placed in the Ollie AHC folder, you'll see that they are exactly the same.

The copy & the original are identical.

Now I know that we're just playing around with a simple text document here, but the same is actually true whatever the file is.

It really wouldn't matter to us if we were copying pictures, music, or videos.

The copies are exactly the same as the originals.

    is this the original?
    or is this the original?

It's this ability of a computer to quickly and easily make an exact copy of any sort of file that we'll use later to back up our most important documents and pictures etc.

We can simply Copy & Paste them onto a USB stick. Job done.

Open the folder Ollie AHC by double left clicking it, and inside you'll see the Dummy file we dropped in there earlier.

And you'll see the folder Stan AHC.

What we've done is to Copy & Paste an entire folder, including all it's contents.

    copied & pasted.

The folder Stan AHC only has a simple text file inside it, but it would have been just the same if it had hundreds of files inside it.

And it doesn't matter if the files are mixed, it would work exactly the same if we had pictures and music as well as documents in there.

When you Copy and Paste a folder, everything inside that folder is Copied & Pasted.
