How to block unwanted email in Outlook. Stop spam (junk) emails from reaching your Outlook Inbox.
When you add an email address or domain to your blocked senders list, Outlook automatically moves messages from that sender or domain to the Junk Email folder.
In this guide I’ll show you how to quickly block spam emails in Outlook.com, the New Outlook (formerly Windows Mail) and also Outlook Classic.
Block Emails In Outlook
If you’re receiving unwanted emails in the web version of Outlook (Outlook.com), New Outlook or the Classic version, you can easily add that person to a blocked senders list. Emails from blocked senders are automatically moved to the Junk Email folder.
Log in to your Outlook on the web account or open New Outlook or Outlook Classic (whichever you use).
Scroll through your Inbox and find an email from a sender that you’d like to block.
Right click on the email.
On the options menu, hover over Block, then left click Block Sender.
Outlook will ask for confirmation that you want to block the sender.
Click the OK button.
How To Unblock A Sender In Outlook
You might want to unblock a previously blocked sender in Outlook.
To unblock a sender in Outlook.com and New Outlook app, click the Settings icon (the gear wheel).
On the Settings screen, click –
- Click Email
- Click Junk Email
- Then click on the Blocked Senders and Domains tab.
Find and delete the sender that you want to unblock.
Unblocking Senders In Outlook Classic
To unblock a sender in Outlook Classic, click the 3 horizontal dots in the top right hand corner (More Commands).
Then on the menu go to Block, and then click Junk Email Options.
On the Junk Email options screen, click the Blocked Senders tab. Select the sender you want to unblock and click the Remove button.
Blocking Email Domains In Outlook
A email domain is the part of the address that includes @ and everything after it. For example @gmail.com, @yahoo.com and @outlook.com are all email domains.
Blocking an entire domain can really help cut down on the amount of spam (junk) emails that you receive.
For example, if you block the email address sales@example.com, any emails coming from that address will be blocked. But if the sender changes the address to promotions@example.com or offers@example.com, those won’t be blocked. You’d need to add all three to the blocked senders list.
But if you block the domain @example.com, then any emails originating from that domain will automatically be moved to the Junk folder in Outlook.
To stop emails from a domain in Outlook, open the email and then hover your pointer over the circular icon. A popup will open with extra information including the email address of the sender.
Make a note of everything after the @ symbol.
Open the blocked senders list.
For Outlook.com and New Outlook app click – Settings (gear wheel) – Email – junk Email – Blocked Senders and Domains tab.
For Outlook Classic click – More Commands (3 horizontal dots) – Block – Junk Email Options – Blocked Senders tab.
Once you’re there, click the Add Blocked Sender button, in Classic click the Add button.
Enter the domain part of the email address that you want to block into the box provided and click OK.
Summary.
For nuisance or malicious messages from an individual it’s usually good enough to simply block the sender.
Stopping spam from arriving in your Inbox though is another matter. It’s usually more effective to block the domain.
